As you clean each room remember to clean from the top down.  Science was not my favorite subject in school! However, when cleaning from the top-down gravity is working with you not against you as dust, dirt, and particles from the top area of the room will fall.  For example, if you clean the floor first and then dust your light fixtures you will have to clean the floor twice as the dust will fall to the ground.

Cleaning the floors last will allow you to work smarter not harder.

Also, as you clean each room remove and declutter any items that you no longer need.  This may be in the form of throwing the items away, donating the items, selling the items, or storing the items away.

Living Room

Our living rooms are rooms that we use every day.  As a family, we often gather in our living rooms to watch TV, play games, and complete many other social activities.  Depending on the function of your living room, your cleaning needs may vary. One staple that each living room has is a couch.  Don’t forget to complete a deep cleaning of the couch.  I’m always amazed at what I found in my couch when I remove the pillows!

Kitchen

Cleaning your kitchen will require the use of liquid cleaning agents.  This may include homemade solutions such as lemon and vinegar or you may prefer to use commercial cleaning items.

When you clean the kitchen it is important to remove all items from the refrigerator, shelves, pantries, and cabinets.  This will allow you to complete a deep cleaning of the areas as the kitchen always has hidden food particles in many places.  As you remove items from the refrigerator, shelves, pantries, and cabinets look for expired items, throwing these items away.

Bedrooms

Our bedrooms are often our safe-havens.  If you have multiple comforter sets, consider switching the comforters as part of your spring cleaning duties.   This one trick can instantly revamp the room.

Cleaning and organizing your closets will require a plan and may need to be completed over several days.  As you organize your closets, store away any fall or winter clothes and accessories.  If you have any clothes or accessories that you do not wear anymore sell or donate the items.

Bathrooms

Your bathroom also will require the use of liquid cleaning agents.

As you clean your bathrooms, complete an inventory of your hygiene products to include makeup as many of these items have an expiration date (most expire after a year). It is best to throw these items away. As you complete your inventory, you may see that you often have purchased many of the same items.  If you can combine similar items (lotion, shampoo, etc.). In addition, take the time to replace or wash your shower curtains.  This is often overlooked and houses various germs.

Other Tasks

Focusing on one room at a time has a natural flow.  However, there are some spring cleaning tasks that we do not want to forget that are not located in particular rooms in our homes.  We don’t want to forget miscellaneous areas such as closets and cabinets.  We also don’t want to forget the areas outside of our home such as our lawns and gardens. This is a good time to check your lawn equipment to see if they are in working condition as they have been dormant for months.
