How To Decorate Your Kitchen Counters Without Clutter

The kitchen is the heart of the home.  In our kitchen we cook, socialize, and entertain. With so many activities occurring in the kitchen, it can become cluttered fast! Are you okay with the clutter or do you often think, “How can I decorate my kitchen counters without clutter?”

By decluttering your kitchen first and being intentional on what you currently need in your kitchen, you can decorate your kitchen counters without the clutter!

Today I am going to share tips on how to decorate your kitchen counters without clutter.

Lets jump in!

1.Examine Your Kitchen

The goal of this article is to decorate your kitchen counters without clutter, but you will have to address your entire kitchen before you can meet your ultimate goal-decorating your kitchen counters without clutter.

The first step is to examine your kitchen.

In examining your kitchen look in all areas of your kitchen to determine the items that you currently have and the function of the items.

Pay close attention and start with items in your cabinets, pantries, refrigerator, and drawers.

As you look through each space in the kitchen, think about kitchen items that you no longer use, kitchen items that don’t have a purpose anymore, and any items that could move to a more “appropriate” place in your home (for example your daily mail).

This leads us to our next step!

2.Declutter Your Kitchen

After you assess your kitchen you should begin to have a good idea of items that you can part ways with.

Remember when examining your kitchen, you thought about items that you no longer use, items that don’t serve a purpose anymore, and any items that could move to a more “appropriate” place in your home.

With these items in mind our next step is to decide if you would like to: throw away the items, donate the items, sell the items or find a new home for the items in your home.

Find used boxes or bags and label each box or bag trash, donate, sell, and new home.

Next sort the items into each box or bag.

Some basic items that will immediately come to your head or you might have noticed that you would like to part ways with are:

Expired food and spices

Extra lids

Old kitchen gadgets

Old dishes

Coffee mugs

Here are more items that you can also think about parting ways with if they no longer serve a purpose or if you have not used these items in a while. The choice is totally up to you!

Worn or chipped plates and cups

Worn or chipped casserole dishes

Old dish rags

Odd Tupperware dishes

Expired medicines

Items in your junk drawer

Cookbooks

Items that you have multiple sets of

Old bottles and sippy cups

Multiple syringes used for your kids’ medicines

Old lunch bags

Tip:  Be Aggressive And Ruthless Purge.

3.Create Zones

After you declutter your kitchen, you should have additional space in your kitchen cabinets, pantry, and drawers.

With the remaining items in the kitchen, we want to assign them to zones.  By creating assigned zones, you are identifying specific areas in your kitchen for the items to be housed.

For example, it would be a good idea to assign and place all of your spices in a cabinet by the stove or staples in the pantry.

Create a zone for all of your Tupperware, plates, dishes and cups.

Place your larger items such as your blender, Airfryer, and mixers in the pantry on the bottom shelf floor or in bottom cabinets.

Keep decluttering and creating zones until approximately 80-85% of your kitchen counter space is free.

4.Declutter and Clear Your Kitchen Counters

Now that you have space in your kitchen, create and assign items on your kitchen counter also to the zones in your kitchen.

Keep decluttering and assigning zones until approximately 80-85% of your kitchen counter space is free.

Next, look at your 15-20% remaining items on the kitchen counter.

Are the remaining items, items that you use daily or sparingly?  If you use them sparingly, find a zone for the item or part ways with the item.

Remember the less that we have on our counters the better!

Our goal is to free up spaces in our kitchen which will ultimately allow you to free up space on your kitchen counter for décor without the clutter.

5.Make It Functional

Now that we have a clean and clear countertop (YES!!) we can finally begin to think about kitchen décor BUT remember our goal is to decorate the kitchen countertop without clutter.

Clear and clutter free counters does not justify bringing in an overwhelming amount of décor.

As we think about kitchen décor items, it’s vital to think about what kitchen décor items can we use that are decorative in nature AND functional.

Functional means items that we actually use these items on a consistent basis and they have a specific purpose.

Below are items that you can consider as kitchen décor AND functional items.

Fruit-Purchase a decorative bowl and fill the bowl with real or faux fruit.

Decorative towels-You can purchase decorative towels at almost any local store at reasonable prices.  Amazon also has an abundance of towels.

I absolutely love buying decorative towels for my counters.

Tip: Purchase a Free Standing Hand Towel Rack. Place your decorative towel in the front and your dish towel in the back.

Cutting Boards-I use cutting boards on a daily basis.  Purchase (or you may currently own them) cutting boards that are different sizes and lay/stack them against your kitchen counters.  For example, place together a rectangular cutting board and a circular cutting board.

Oils in decorative bottles-Oils such as olive oils are staples in our daily recipes.  Place the oils in a glass container and group them with your cutting boards for an instant décor upgrade!

Utensil Sets-We definitely use utensils often multiple times a day! Place your utensil set in a corner on your kitchen counter for a bold yet functional look.

Coffee Stations-Coffee makers are a staple in our homes. Create another focal point in your kitchen by creating a coffee station.  Beside your coffee maker consider adding a small canister to hold your coffee essentials.  Accent the coffee station with a decorative cup.

There are thousands of ways to decorate your coffee station but be selective of the number of items that you select for décor.

Clutter-free decorative countertops means that we are decorating with items that we use regularly.

Hand and soap dispensers-Another simple way to add décor to your kitchen with functional items that we use everyday.

6.Incorporate Greenery and Flowers

The majority of our items should be functional however think about 1-2 décor statement items that you can include to bring all of your functional items together.

Vases with greenery and decorative flowers are timeless statement pieces that will allow your personality type to shine and allow your kitchen to have a focal point.

You can make your initial greenery choice a staple in your kitchen or you change it each season for a quick kitchen décor refresher.

Your greenery can be real plants or flowers purchased from a store.

The choices are endless!

Bonus Décor Tip:

Place your greenery and flowers in a vase and place the vase on or next to a decorate lazy susan or decorative tray.  Cake stands work too!

Next to the vase place a candle.

Some other décor items that you could also pair with the vase are:

Small teacup

Decorative salt and pepper set

Decorative kitchen signs

Be sure to group the items. By grouping the items, you are creating a focal point in your kitchen.

These tips have allowed me to decorate my kitchen counters without clutter! Don’t forget that decluttering is not a one-time process.

To keep your counters and kitchen clutter-free create a schedule when you can consistently declutter and clean your kitchen.

Also don’t forget that in order to decorate your kitchen without the clutter, an abundance of kitchen décor is not needed.

Use functional items that you actually use everyday.
