Easy home projects

1. Organize Your Junk Drawer

Our junk drawers become the home of all our odds and ends.  To organize your junk drawer, start by taking everything out.  Clean the drawer and place mini containers in the drawer.  Decide what each container will hold (writing utensils, post it, tape, rubber bands, scissors, etc.).

Begin to sort the items in the identified categories.  Toss or donate items that are not apart of the identified categories.

This organizing technique is referred to as organizing for the space not the materials and forces you to part ways with items.

2. Organize Your Car

Our cars are an extension of our home.  Grab your home vacuum cleaner and a trash bag and set the timer for 20 minutes.  Place large pieces of trash in the trash bag and vacuum the small pieces of trash.

Throw away or shred any expired insurance cards, registration cards, coupons, loyalty cards, and other pieces of papers that are no longer needed.

Organize your glove department by ensuring that you have up to date insurance cars and registration cards.

If you don’t have a home vacuum cleaner, visit your local car wash to clean and organize your car.  A car wash will be an added bonus.

3. Organize One Drawer

In your bedroom go through one drawer that contains clothing items.  A sock drawer is the easiest to start with.  First go through your drawer removing socks that have holes or seem to be very worn.  With the remaining socks create pairs.  Lastly, fold the pair of socks in half, folding the pair in half again.  Another simple way to organize and fold your socks is to roll the socks, neatly tucking the socks.  This tutorial has many folding options for socks.

4. Organize The Mail

If you are unable to go through your mail on a daily basis (which is best), set a time to go through your mail.  Shred or throw away any junk mail or mail that you no longer need. Next, create two piles with the remaining items. Pile one will consist of items that you need to address now.  Pile two will consist of mail items  that you will need to come back to soon (Don’t forget to come back to the items) to address.

5. Organize Your Email

Spend 30 minutes going through your email deleting emails that you no longer need. Unsubscribe to email providers that are no longer useful to you.  This will stop the flow of emails.

6. Organize Your Phone

Organize your phone by deleting apps and photos.  In just ten minutes you can delete over one hundred pictures which will free up memory space!  After you delete the apps that you no longer use, create folders to organize the remaining apps.

Tips: Delete your screenshot pictures first.  These usually don’t hold emotional attachment for us which means that hitting the delete button will come easy.

7. Start a home organization binder

This is a game changer.  A home organization binder is a binder that stores important information regarding your home and family. It serves as a central location that will allow you to access the documents in a quick manner. To create a home organization binder you will need a binder, dividers, and important papers.  To decide what papers are important for the home organization binder, first decide what categories are important for your family. Family contacts, dates, finances, schedules, medical concerns, and schedules are common important categories to include.

Next, when you have all the items together, separate each item according to their identified category. Hole punch or use clear protector pages and place the papers in the binder.  Separate the categories using dividers or a colored sheet of paper.

8. Meal Plan

Organizing a meal plan for the week or month is a great simple home organizing task as it allows you to organize your evenings.  Look in your kitchen panty to determine what food staples that you currently have.  Based on the food items that you have, begin to make a dinner menu for each day of the week.  If there are items that you will need to purchase, make a grocery list and plan to make a trip to the store soon.

9. Clean Out Your Refrigerator

Set the timer for 20 minutes and grab a bag or utilize your garbage disposal.  Dispose of any old food and food that you know that you will no longer eat.  Look for expired items. Expired milk, cheese, and condiments are my go to oftens when looking for expired dates.  When the timer goes off set the timer again- this time for 10 minutes and wash any dishes that you may have emptied.

10.Organize your medicine cabinet

Just as you went through your refrigerator, also go through your medicine cabinet.  Look and properly dispose of expired vitamins and medicines.

11. Organize Your Purse

I think that I could win the award for having the most coupons in my purse.  Go through your purse and clear it of any unneeded paper.  If you have receipts that you still need, designate a place at home to store the receipts.

Place all your credit and debit cards, gift cards, etc back in your wallet.  Small pouches work great as organizers for purses and serves as a home to place similar items.  If you have makeup throughout your bag, place all of your makeup in a pouch.  Placing my writing utensils in a pouch has also helped with the organization with my purse as you can never have too many pens.
