The Best Morning Routine For Success

What if you could set your day up for success within the first two hours of waking?

Having a morning routine is vital, worth the personal investment, and can allow you to achieve this goal!

By implementing habits that will allow you to have a productive morning you are creating a positive space, mindset, and environment which will allow you to have a positive day.

Let’s discover how to set your morning up for success which will subsequentially also set your day up to flourish!

morning routine examples

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Did you know that success for the next day actually starts the day before?  In order for you to have a productive morning you MUST get an adequate amount of sleep.

Studies differ on the specific amount of hours of sleep that individuals need. However, John Hopkins Medicine and many medical articles recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep.

If you sleep the recommended 7 to 9 hours, the next morning your body be will well rested and you will have natural energy. You will be able to think logically and be more productive-our ultimate goal.

Medical News Today also asserts that by getting 7 or more hours of sleep you will have enhanced memory, be in a position to better maintain your weight, have enhanced emotional and social intelligence, and be in a position to build a stronger immune system.

These are all benefits that make having a morning routine worth it.

If you are sleeping less than 7 hours a day, chances are that you will wake up the next morning feeling fatigued, irritable, and moody.

I don’t know about you but those are not the characteristics that I strive for when waking up!

Before preparing to go to sleep, cease any activities that have blue light (smartphones, smart TVs, and tablets).  By engaging with blue light you are boosting your mental alertness.

While there is a time and place for blue light (we definitely want to be alert during the day), if our goal is to transition into a deep sleep, blue lights stop this, keeping us alert and awake beyond our desired bedtime.

Set your alarm clock for a reasonable time

Before setting your phone aside for the night, set your alarm clock at a reasonable time.

If your workday starts at 9:00 a.m., setting your alarm at 8:00 a.m. is not enough time to complete your morning tasks, especially if you have kids!

You will find yourself rushing which counters our ultimate goal of having an organized and productive start to the day.

If you your workday starts at 9:00 a.m. aim to wake up at least two hours before your workday begins.

This would be the wakeup time of 7:00 a.m. however you may have to adjust the time depending on your morning tasks and commute time to work.

In my morning routine, I personally strive to wake up 2 ½ hours before the start of my workday.

With small children, I allot some of this time to myself before waking my children up.

If they wake up while I am completing my morning tasks, they usually like to hang out in my bed until I prompt them to start getting ready.

Tip: Do not press the snooze button! This will take away from the time that you have allotted, causing you to rush.

Prep Clothes the Night Before

Another tip that will allow you to have a productive morning but occurs the night before includes prepping your clothes.

When we wake in the morning many of us we do not have countless hours before leaving for work or school.

This means we have to be intentional about the time that we do have.

By prepping your clothes the night before you are saving precious time and can spend this time in other areas.

It’s also one less task that you have to think about.

If you have small children, prep their clothes as well.  As your children become older, give them the responsibility of prepping their clothes the night before as well.

This productive morning routine is perfect for students!

TIP: Check your weather app while prepping your clothes.

Incorporate a Self-Care Activity for the Day

In the morning we often hit the ground running. Literally!

There will time in the day when you will definitely need to exercise this skill but remember we are setting our alarm clock with enough time that will work for us and include meaningful activities.

Before facing the world, it is vital that we connect with our ourselves, addressing and nourishing our mental health.

This will vary among each individual but can include meditation, praying, reading, exercising, journaling, specialized breathing, and yoga.

These activities when incorporated consistently will allow you to manage stress, improve your productivity at your workplace, and will enhance the relationships in your life.

Hold off on Engaging with Technology

Many individuals use their phones as an alarm clock.  After turning off your alarm clock try not to engage with texts, social media, and the internet unless it is an emergency.

By engaging with our technology devices we throw away precious time.

Not only do we waste time our mind becomes pre-occupied and we become distracted and irritable in some cases.

For example, I had a bad habit of checking my work email as a part of my morning routine.

In many cases I would read an email that would cause me to become distracted and anxious before I even arrived at work.

Talk about a disaster!!

By no longer reading work emails before work and implementing self-care routines instead, I can focus and handle the situations so much better.

how to have a productive morning before school

Hydrate and Eat a Healthy Breakfast

While taking care of your mental health is vital, we can’t forget about your physical care as well.

The night before place a glass or bottle of water by your bedside so that hydrating your body is one of the first actions that you take when waking.

If you don’t finish the entire glass, take sips of water while you complete your morning tasks.

Before leaving out the door make sure that you have eaten or planned for a healthy breakfast. This may include a variety of foods (eggs, fruits, vegetables).

Try to stay away from fruit juices and foods that will spike your sugar quickly.

Staying free of food that is high of sugar will increase your cognitive abilities and productivity.

You will definitely notice the difference of your increased abilities at work.

I currently implement intermittent fasting and have a late breakfast.  This works for me since I leave my home at approximately 6:45.

The night before I also prep my breakfast and lunch and have a cup of tea or coffee in the morning. This gives me extra minutes to complete additional tasks in the morning.

TIP: Prep your breakfast the night before

These are my must have tips that allow me to have morning routine that promotes a successful morning and day.   Do you use any of these tips when getting ready for your workday or school day?

6 Incredibly Kitchen Organization Tips

Do you struggle keeping one of the most used rooms in your home organized?  By reading this post you will learn kitchen organization ideas and be on your way to having an organized kitchen that will allow you to instantly fall heads over heels in love with your kitchen again!

Lets face it. The kitchen is one of the most used and vital room in our homes.  Many of our days start in the kitchen upon waking as we prefer to start our day with our favorite morning beverage or breakfast food.

The kitchen is also an important space as it serves as a communication hub.  After a long day at the dinner table we discuss our day, detailing positive and negative experiences that have occurred throughout the day.

These conversations have allowed us to create bonds and connect as a family.

The kitchen also serves as a multifunction space.  When my three kids were younger, they completed their homework in the kitchen while I prepared dinner.

On crazy days when I run behind on time, my multi-tasking skills are definitely in action and I can be seen combing my daughter’s hair while she eats her breakfast in the kitchen.

In addition, with such a large amount of time spent in the kitchen and the many uses of our kitchen, our kitchen may be the home to many items that probably deserve a “better home” which may prompt you to consider organizing your kitchen.

Let’s discover how to complete this goal and organize your kitchen space!

Easy Organizing

Decant Food

Buying and using clear containers to decant and organize my pantry was the BEST organization decision for my kitchen!

By using clear containers to decant food items in my panty, I have a clear visual which allows me to quickly analyze what current staple food items that I have in my pantry.

This lets me know if I am running low on items and include the item on my weekly list.

This is a huge benefit for me as a mom.  For example, if you keep your cereal in the original container, you may forget that you are running low on the item.

With small kids this may cause meltdowns and we definitely don’t want those!

The boxes and containers that many of our staple items come in are also bulky and take up unnecessary space.  By creating a system that consists of clear containers you are freeing up additional space for your pantry.

You also are prolonging the life of your foods.  Boxes that contain and cereal and other staple foods, when opened, will decrease the freshness of your food which can be costly if you are having to replace these foods constantly due to the freshness being lost.

With your staple foods being in a container with a tight lid you will increase the time that your food stays fresh.

If you decide to follow the clear container trend, take measurements of your pantry, thinking about what you will store in the containers and what you will not store in the containers.

This will determine the amount of containers that you need to purchase.

Also compare prices and the quality of the containers as these containers can last for years.

Account for items in your panty that will not go in clear containers and create a system for those items as well.

I currently place my liquid items on a Lazy Susan and miscellaneous items such as popcorn, raisins, chips in bins.

If you want to boost your kitchen organization journey, label your clear containers.

Create Assigned Zones

In your kitchen creating assigned zones means that items in your kitchen should have a specific area to be housed.

This task is not as complicated as home builders help us in this area with cabinetry and pantries.

If you notice often next to your stove and oven are smallercabinets.  These are usually designed for spices which are needed while cooking over the stove.

This area would be assigned solely for spices and other items such as cooking sprays and oils.

In your cabinets above the sink create assigned zones for your plates, cups, and Tupperware.

In your lower cabinets create assigned zones for pots, pans, casserole dishes, muffin trays, woks, etc.

I also utilize a cabinet above the sink for our medicine cabinet.  This ensures that our medicines are kept out of reach from our younger children.

If you are a beverage lover and enjoy your daily dose of coffee and tea, create an assigned area that houses the necessary items to make your favorite beverage.  This could be on a cart or an assigned area on your counter space.

Many call this area a coffee or tea bar.  Jen at Organizenvy has a great post on organizing a coffee and tea bar.

If you do create a coffee or tea bar on your counters utilize a small space as we don’t want the area to become cluttered.

Don’t stop at just creating a zone for coffee bar, spices, and dishware!

In your refrigerator create zones.  Organize and assign a zone specifically for your drinks, vegetables, fruits, dairy, leftovers, meats, and condiments.

TIP: When organizing zones in your pantry create a “snack zone for your children.”  If they are reaching the stage of independence, teach them to go to that assigned zone to grab their daily snack.

counter hacks

Clear Surface=Clear Mind

As you create zones, assign most of your food items and kitchen items including your silverware, tools, pots, pans, dinnerware, cups to your cabinets, pantries, and refrigerator.

This will help you create clear surfaces with ease.

If you are low on cabinet space or don’t have a pantry, carts, hanging shelves, racks, and over the door organizers work wonders!

During prep time and mealtimes, I utilize my counter space quite frequently.  However, when I clean up as part of my routine, I return the items to their assigned zones.

If you currently have items other than kitchen items and necessities (i.e. mail, magazines) in your kitchen consider finding another home for these items.

With a clear counter space, you will have a clear mind.

Declutter Your Kitchen

As you create assigned zones for your kitchen items, you will move items around to their new assigned areas.

When you do this, don’t forget one of the basic organization steps!

Declutter, Declutter, Declutter.

For example, when creating your spice zone, place all your spices on the counters.  Check the expiration date and throw away any expired spices.  Donate spices that are still within the expiration date that you no longer use.

Strive to create equal sets of silverware, plates, and containers.  If you only have 5 bowls of Tupperware but 10 lids, chances are you can part ways with the extra lids.

I am guilty of having sooooo many cups and mugs even though I navigate solely to two every day.  When decluttering I still have kept some cups for guests but also donate a good amount.

how to make a kitchen drawer organized

Complete A Weekly Inventory

With clear containers, this process should go much smoother!

Before going to buy your weekly groceries, take an inventory of the items that you currently have.  This will allow you to not purchase items that you do not need.

By buying items that you do not need, you reduce clutter which helps your kitchen stay organized.

5 ways to keep your kitchen clean and safe

Create a Cleaning Routine

In order to keep your organized kitchen organized you have to maintain the systems that you create.

Each night when cleaning, remember to return your kitchen items to their assigned zones.

Cleaning the dishes, wiping down your counters, sinks, and appliances, emptying the trash, running the garbage disposal, and sweeping the floor are basic everyday tasks that will keep your kitchen tidy.

One day out of the week or bi-weekly, complete a deep cleaning of your kitchen.

Tasks such as wiping down the refrigerators, mopping the floor, cleaning out your refrigerator, cleaning out your pantry, and cleaning your microwave will leave your kitchen sparkling!

You will need to clean your oven as well but this step may only need to be completed bi-weekly not weekly.

7 Habits of Highly Organized People

Have you dreamed of becoming an organized person at work or home but don’t know where to start? By reading this post you will learn 7 habits of organized people and will be motivated to adopt at least one of the traits.

I promise!

Organization is a trait that many individuals strive for.  Organized people possess habits that make them more productive, have a greater sense of security, have more time for enjoyable hobbies, experience less stress, meet personal and work goals in a timely manner, and experience enhanced relationships.

Being organized also has positive mental aspects.  According to Psychology Today, being organized helps our brain function in an enhanced manner as unorganized people often struggle to focus and complete tasks due to their environments and spaces being cluttered.

Being organized promotes positive sleep habits, stress relief, and an overall healthier lifestyle.

I could go on and on as the results are endless!

I have observed the following 7 organization traits in highly successful individuals.

After implementing these habits in my life, I have experienced immense growth in the area of organization and now reap these benefits!

habits of organized persons

1.They have a strong morning routine

Organized people have a strong morning routine as it can make or break their day.  Often when awakening, individuals usually have a small window of time before their day begins.  Organized people have a set time to wake up, avoid their phone or television when they awake, and have time allotments for self-reflection practices, self-care, and breakfast.

Organized people also factor in the time in getting children ready in the morning.  As a mother of three, I would wake up before my children and complete my self-reflection practices and self-care practice, and pack lunches.

Completing these steps before waking my children allowed me to have a peaceful start to my morning.

When my children woke, I could solely focus on their needs.

Lastly, organized people build in a flex window of additional time to plan for any surprises.  Read here on to how to set up a successful morning routine in detail

2.They Utilize To-Do Lists, Planners, and Checklists

Remember that organized individuals have a strong morning routine which includes a flex window of additional time.

Imagine the following scenario:  A busy mom has a late start, runs behind schedule as she scrambles into work five minutes late.  Frazzled, she sits down at her desk, starting her day.  Upset that she has entered work late two days this week she struggles to focus on her daily tasks.

At approximately 2:00 she receives a phone call from her dentist’s office informing her that she missed her scheduled appointment.   Disappointed that she cannot stay on track of tasks at home or work she bursts into tears.

Hopefully this scenario doesn’t sound familiar, but if it does, it is totally okay!

Implementing some of these habits are definitely going to help you and make organization a habit!

Organized people usually avoid these scenarios by having a list of items to complete for the day.  Known as a checklist or to-do list, this can be done on a sheet of paper, in your phone, or document on your computer or tablet.

The list simply lists tasks that must be completed as well as appointments for the day. Having a list that you can visually see helps you remember important tasks.

In the 21st century, there are many technology devices that will help you compile a checklist or to-do list.  I continue to prefer to use paper as physical writing helps your brain connect to the task.

Tip: Highlight important tasks and appointments!

habits process

3.They Prep For the following Day

Organized people always look ahead to the next day.  Before retiring for the next day, they review and look over their to-do lists, planner, and checklists.  This gives you an overview of the day and allows you to think of any modifications that may need to be made.

For example, if your have on your calendar a important meeting at work the next day you may want to adjust your alarm clock to arrive a work a few minutes earlier.  Arriving early will allow you to look over the agenda which can relieve the amount of stress level that you may have regarding the meeting.

I like to have a to-do list for both work and home.  Sometimes I list items on both lists.  Any health appointments for the family are written on both lists so that I can remember the appointment.

habits of organized women

4. They Chunk Activities

Chunking is a strategy in which you break activities into smaller sections.

Lets say your child has a birthday party coming up next month. Break the party planning process into smaller sections to avoid less stress.  Week 1 you could select the theme and invite guests.

Week 2 and 3 you would write a list of all the items needed and purchase all the items needed and plan out any games.

Week 4 you would ensure that you have all the needed items.  2-3 days before the party you would set up as much as possible so that on the day of the party you experience less stress!

Does less stress even exist when planning birthday parties?

habits to stay organized

5.They Have a Mini-Cleaning Routine Throughout the Week

Remember the chunking strategy mentioned?  Organized people thrive in clean, neat, and uncluttered spaces and have adopted clutter free habits.  Instead of allowing their home and work spaces to become unrecognizable with clutter and dirt, they perform mini-cleaning routines throughout the week.

They may clean one room or day or area a day, chunking their cleaning process.

Also washing a few loads of clothes a week should be a priority in your mini-cleaning routine.

Remember to wash, dry, fold, and put up your clothes.  Clean clothes in a basket creates clutter!

6.They Have a Place for Everything

Organized people have a place for everything.

When people have a place for items in their home and at work the amount of clutter is immediately reduced.  In addition to reduced clutter, you are less likely to misplace important items such as your keys and wallet as these things will have a “home” within your home in which you will place these items everyday.

Labels work wonders in giving items a “home” within your home.

what are the 7 habits in order

7.They Have a Strong Evening Routine

After the hustle and bustle of the day, organized individuals wind down in a way that results in a peaceful evening.  They complete their mini-cleaning routine, lay out their clothes for the next day, and prep their lunch.

After completing the manual activities, they review the activities for the next day and unplug from technology devices before they prepare for bed.  This allows their bodies to relax and prepare for a healthy night of sleep, setting the stage for the next day.

Final Thoughts

This blog discussed 7 habits that organized people often have, qualities that you can also possess.

Organizational habits will help your days flow so much smoother, I promise!

5 Natural Home Spring Cleaning Tips

Getting ready to spring clean your home this spring season? If you made goals at the beginning of the year to progress and adopt healthier habits, contribute to your goals by using natural products in conjunction with these 5 natural spring cleaning tips while you clean your home.

For many individuals, spring is the best season.  Spring brings in warmer weather, additional sunshine, more hours in a day, and we are graced with new life and new beginnings.

With warmer weather and additional sunshine, spring is the perfect time for spring cleaning and organizing!

By using natural cleaning supplies and recipes, you are cleaning your home in ways that will benefit your health, energy, and finances.

Another positive approach to using natural cleaning supplies is that we generally already have the items in our homes!

The following natural items and natural spring cleaning hacks will leave your home sparkly clean, fresh, with a nice scent, and are eco-friendly!

natural spring cleaning tips

Baking Soda

Baking soda will always top the list as a natural powerhouse cleaning agent due to its low cost!

Baking soda can be combined with many other cleaning agents to create cleaning solutions that are out of this world.  One baking soda hack is to create a baking soda paste. To create a baking soda paste, mix half a cup of baking soda with water until you create a paste and consistency to your liking.

You can also add a few drops of dish soap and vinegar and magic is instantly made!

This paste can be used to clean your stove and oven in your kitchen.

When cleaning the stovetop, spread the paste on the stove top and let it sit for a while.  30 minutes is a good time limit.

After 30 minutes you can wipe the paste off with a towel.  If you feel, comfortable before wiping the paste off with a towel you can clean use a razor blade going back and forth to remove food particles.

If you do use a razor blade, make sure that your stove top is saturated with the paste AND lots of water.

You can use the same routine for cleaning the oven, however, it is best to let the paste stay inside the oven for a minimum of 12 hours if you have the time.

This paste also works wonders in the bathroom.  I also let the paste sit in my bathroom sinks and shower for a minimum of 30 minutes to ensure that the paste has time to work its magic.

Cleaning with baking soda has so many benefits!

natural spring cleaning supplies

Lemons

Lemons are another natural powerhouse!  They are cost-efficient but they have so many other benefits.

In your kitchen lemons can be used to clean stained containers, your microwave, refrigerator, oven, and counters, and so much more.

When cleaning your containers squeeze lemon juice inside the containers letting the lemon juice soak with a pinch of baking soda for 30 minutes.  For severe stains allow the lemon juice and baking soda to soak for several hours.

Tackle tough microwave stains by placing a safe microwavable bowl in the microwave with water and freshly squeezed lemons.  Place the bowl in the microwave and allow the lemon water to boil for 3-5 minutes.  After 3-5 minutes allow the water to remain in the microwave for another 5 minutes before removing the water and wiping down the microwave.

Use this same method for cleaning your oven (use an oven safe dish).  Use an oven safe dish and cut the oven on for approximately 30 minutes on 425 degrees.  Allow the oven to cool before removing the water and wiping down the oven.

When cleaning your counters, lemons can be directly sprayed on the counters or you can create a lemon cleaning solution with a lemon, water, and vinegar.

I prefer to use a cleaning solution placed in a spray bottle and use this solution for the kitchen and bathroom.

To create the solution simply mix 1 cup of water, 1 cup of vinegar, and juice from a lemon in a spray bottle.

The lemon solution can also be used on floor cleaner when mopping your kitchen and bathroom floors.

Lastly, place lemon peels in the garbage disposal for a natural deodorizer.

Oranges

Another fruit that can be used as a natural cleaner is an orange.   Natural Library of Medicine asserts oranges contain d-Limonene, an essential oil, that is often found in cleaning agents.  D-Limeone helps to remove dirt, sanitizes, and also acts as a natural deodorant.

To make an orange cleaning solution, place orange peels with vinegar (the vinegar will need to cover the oranges) in a glass jar for approximately two weeks.

After two weeks transfer the cleaning liquid to a spray bottle.  Many prefer to add an equal ratio to water when cleaning household items such as refrigerators, and countertops with the mixture.  For example, if you used 1 cup of vinegar you would combine and add in 1 cup of water.

Similar to lemons, orange peels can also be used as a deodorizer for your garbage disposal.

Place your orange peels in your garbage disposal with running water.

Always test a small area before cleaning with the vinegar and citrus fruits to ensure that a negative reaction does not occur.

Essential Oils

After utilizing the natural cleaning hacks your home should smell fresh, especially if you have used lemons and oranges in the process.  However, if you would like to add additional fragrances to your home during your spring cleaning process, essential oils are the natural way to go.

To create an essential spray that will deodorize your home in an eco-friendly way you will need a glass spray bottle.

In the glass spray bottle combine 15-20 drops of essential oils, 3 oz of water, as well as 1 oz of alcohol.

You may prefer to use additional drops of essential oil or a lesser amount of essential oils.

When you have combined all of the liquids inside of the bottle, place the top of the glass container.  Next shake the liquids, spraying the fragrance in various spaces in your home.

There are many essential oils that you can purchase from stores or on the internet.  Some common essential oils are jasmine, lemon, orange, lavender, sage, and rosemary.

If you have pets, they may be sensitive to essential oils.  Contacting your veterinarian will help determine which essential oils are best for your home.

Open Your Windows

Our last natural spring cleaning hack only requires your muscle power!

During the windows due to the cold weather, our windows are closed and our heaters are on.  As the weather becomes warmer, open your windows for natural ventilation!

Outdoor air has many benefits as fresh air gives your lungs a boost, will spike your energy levels, helps reduce stress levels, and can help fill your home with sunshine which promotes better concentration and productivity.

While you complete your spring cleaning tasks, cut on your favorite music, and open the windows to purge the stuffy air that has circulated through your home during the winter months.  Your mood will definitely improve.  I promise!

These are my top 5  natural spring cleaning go-to tips when spring cleaning my home in an eco-friendly way. Do you use any of these natural spring cleaning hacks in your spring cleaning tasks?

As you clean each room remember to clean from the top down.  Science was not my favorite subject in school! However, when cleaning from the top-down gravity is working with you not against you as dust, dirt, and particles from the top area of the room will fall.  For example, if you clean the floor first and then dust your light fixtures you will have to clean the floor twice as the dust will fall to the ground.

Cleaning the floors last will allow you to work smarter not harder.

Also, as you clean each room remove and declutter any items that you no longer need.  This may be in the form of throwing the items away, donating the items, selling the items, or storing the items away.

Living Room

Our living rooms are rooms that we use every day.  As a family, we often gather in our living rooms to watch TV, play games, and complete many other social activities.  Depending on the function of your living room, your cleaning needs may vary. One staple that each living room has is a couch.  Don’t forget to complete a deep cleaning of the couch.  I’m always amazed at what I found in my couch when I remove the pillows!

Kitchen

Cleaning your kitchen will require the use of liquid cleaning agents.  This may include homemade solutions such as lemon and vinegar or you may prefer to use commercial cleaning items.

When you clean the kitchen it is important to remove all items from the refrigerator, shelves, pantries, and cabinets.  This will allow you to complete a deep cleaning of the areas as the kitchen always has hidden food particles in many places.  As you remove items from the refrigerator, shelves, pantries, and cabinets look for expired items, throwing these items away.

It is best to throw these items away. As you complete your inventory, you may see that you often have purchased many of the same items.  If you can combine similar items (lotion, shampoo, etc.). In addition, take the time to replace or wash your shower curtains.  This is often overlooked and houses various germs.

This is a good time to check your lawn equipment to see if they are in working condition as they have been dormant for months.
