5 Awesome and Easy Spring Cleaning Tips

Would you like to bring in the Spring with a bang?  In resetting your home through spring cleaning, you are putting in place actions that will upgrade your home’s appearance, reduce your stress levels, boost your energy levels, and improve your health!

I always notice that the day after Christmas, Mariah Carey’s Christmas songs that have received billions of streams over the holidays instantly stop and all things Christmas miraculously disappear from the stores and Boom……Spring items appear,  sprinkled in with a mixture of Valentines’ Day items in stores.

Bombarded with Spring décor and Spring clothing when I visit my favorite stores, my mind races to Spring cleaning and Spring improvements that I plan to make in my home for the new year.

If you have the same mindset or want to start an annual spring cleaning routine, I know that these 5 Spring cleaning tips that have helped me will definitely help you.

With that being said, let’s jump into these 5 Spring Cleaning Tips!

Spring Cleaning Guide

Have A Plan

When tackling any project, it is vital to have a plan.  According to Explicit Success, having a plan helps you reach your goals faster, builds your confidence as you tackle different projects, increases productivity, and gives you a purpose.

If you attempt to start any project to include Spring cleaning, if you don’t have a plan, chances are you will become frustrated and overwhelmed which may lead to your spring cleaning plan being derailed.

A plan doesn’t have to be super complicated and can be completed on a sheet of paper!

I would first recommend walking through each room in your home and collect “data.” Data is simply you collecting information that when interpreted will help guide your decision-making process.

As you walk through each room and space write down your data (what you notice and observe) and how you plan to address the data.

Next, based on the data come up with a plan to address anything that you would like to change.

For example, I recently took data on our home’s master bedroom closet.  Based on the visual data I observed that we have shoes in shoe boxes, shoes not in shoe boxes, and shoe boxes of every size.

That data allowed me to decide that I would like to organize our closet to have a uniform look.

I plan to update our hangers to one unified color as well as purchase unified shoe containers.

After the items are purchased I am going to schedule a day to update our closet.

This leads to our next Spring cleaning tip!

Take One Day At A Time

When completing spring cleaning tasks do not attempt to do everything in one day!

You will become overwhelmed which will lead you to give up. Create a calendar in which you intentionally plan days to accomplish spring cleaning tasks.  I like to complete 1-2 rooms a day depending on the task.

If you have help you will be able to complete more rooms in a shorter amount of time.

As an educator, I typically complete spring cleaning tasks during the first few days of my district’s designated Spring Break. However, you can schedule days on the weekend to complete the tasks.

Also, think of the phrase “Quality Over Quantity.”

We want to ensure that as you complete your spring cleaning projects, you are not focused on completing the tasks in one day, but really focusing on each space, ensuring that whatever goal that you have created for that space, you are striving to reach that goal in an excellent manner.

Move at a pace that you feel comfortable with!

Include Decluttering In Your Spring Cleaning Plans

Remember the phrase “Quality Over Quantity?”

No matter how much you clean and organize if you are not removing items from your spaces, you will not get the full satisfaction that you are looking for as you Spring clean.

Decluttering is one of the foundational principles in organization and simply means the discarding of items that are no longer needed and no longer meet our daily needs.

When decluttering your spaces collect “data” to determine which items may need a new home.  A new home may be with a friend, or a potential buyer, in the garage, donation center, or another space in your room.

If you have items that you do not use regularly consider parting ways with the items.

If you have items that are broken and are no longer operational, part ways with the items!

I promise that you will feel so much better when you do!

Switch Out Seasonal Clothes

One of the easiest ways to clean and declutter your home is to switch out seasonal items, primarily seasonal clothes.

I like to use this question as a guide. “Do we keep our Christmas Trees up year-round, Easter Decor, or Thanksgiving Décor up year-round?”

For the majority of us, the answer is no as the visuals would be too overwhelming year-round and are generally only meant for seasonal purposes.

No judgment if you do!

Changing out seasonal clothes allows you to reduce clutter, free up space in your rooms, and find items more quicker.  When making the switch bins are your best friend.

Place your seasonal items in a bin and store these items in a spare closet, your garage, attic, or storage.

Don’t forget to label the bins.  This will help you locate the bins quickly when the season approaches the following year.

Lastly, Tackle Areas That Are Often Forgotten (Baseboards, Refrigerators, Freezers, Windows)

Often areas in our homes such as baseboards, refrigerators, freezers, and windows are often forgotten but these areas also need TLC.

Purposely plan out a specific day to tackle these items.

For example, when cleaning out the refrigerator and freezer, I prefer to complete this task the day before our trash is picked up as I like to throw out any old food and expired seasons.

Cleaning Vinegar with elbow grease often works when cleaning each of these spaces.

Organization 101: Cleaning Vs. Organizing

Cleaning Vs. Organizing

We all have had the Ah-Ha moment where we look at our house and decide that a change is needed in the organization structure of our home. Many think, how can this be? I clean every day or each week!!  Organization can be an overwhelming task without proper strategies and many people are confused on what steps to start with.  In this post we will discover the difference between cleaning and organizing.

What is Cleaning?

cleaning and organizing tips

Cleaning involves removing dirt from a given area. Most people accomplish this through:

  • Sweeping
  • Mopping
  • Dusting or Polishing Surfaces
  • Cleaning or Scrubbing Surfaces
  • Vacuuming
  • Laundering

What is Organizing?

Organizing involves grouping and arranging similar items together, creating zones, and giving each item in your home a “home.”  Most people accomplish this through:

  • Grouping like items together etc.(placing all your shoes together)
  • Decluttering (Donating Items, Selling Items, Throwing Items Away)
  • Labeling Items
  • And most importantly, creating a system that involves the entire family

Should I Clean or Organize First?

When embarking on your organization journey (it will be a journey) many ask should I begin to first organize or should I first clean my house?

Both!!

It is important to establish and maintain a cleaning routine to include daily, weekly, and monthly habits.

This will help with the reduction of germs and bacteria which helps decrease the spread of illnesses and viruses.

Cleaning also aids in stress reduction, mental health, and discipline.

As you embark on creating organizing spaces and systems that work and benefit entire families, continue to have cleaning routines!

I would love to hear from you, do you prefer to clean or organize?

How to Create a Home Office Space

Who would have thought that working from home would be recognized as the norm for many careers and jobs?  Since the pandemic, working from home is now readily recognized in many corporations.  Although I work still work away from home, I have a home office that allows me to focus when blogging and completing work that I bring home. Working from home has many positive benefits however working from home may be difficult if there are factors in the home that keep you unfocused.

By creating an organized and designated space to work, you will become energized, focused, and productive.  These are all needed as you prepare for an 8-hour workday either away from home or at home. Let’s discover how to create a home office space and reach these goals!

How To Create A Home Office

Creating Your Home Office Space

Combining Spaces

When working from home you may have the luxury of having a specific room dedicated and identified as a home office.  If you don’t have this option, analyze the rooms in your house and decide on a room in which you can combine spaces and functions.

When I analyzed my home, I knew that I did not want to have my home office in my bedroom or kitchen (your bedroom should be a safe place where you can unwind after a long day at work).

This prompted me to combine our children’s playroom into a space that currently serves as a playroom and home office.

If you are limited in space, consider dedicating a corner of a room as a home office space. This could include a small area in your living room, dining room, or kitchen. Remember, if you can avoid it, don’t create and organize a home office in your bedroom.

Once you have a space identified in your home that you are going to dedicate for your home office space, the functionality and organization process comes next!

how to create home office

Make your desk your focal point

First make decisions about your desk as this is where a majority of your time will be spent.

Depending on the size of your home office, you will need to consider the size and dimensions of your desk.  Also take into consideration the cost, storage, and setup of the desk.

Having a desk with drawers that allowed me to place papers and office supplies inside the desk drawers, not on top of the desk was very important to me.

This not only decreases visual clutter for me but also gives me additional working space to utilize while working.

Consider lighting

When creating your office home and researching home office ideas, also consider lighting.  Creating a space that has access to natural lighting has many benefits.  Natural lightening increases your mood, energy levels, stimulates productivity, and reduces stress levels.

I strategically placed my desk by the only window in the room where my office is located. This has enhanced my moods while working in my home office.

Natural lighting also works wonder for virtual meetings.  When I have a meeting on Zoom, I use a light ring but natural lighting gives your appearance a boost!

Consider the room’s structure

When creating your home office, consider the layout of the room.  Working from the home will obviously require that you utilize some type of technological device.

You will want to ensure that you are close to an electrical outlet as your computer battery will run low or die during your work day.  Imagine being in an important Zoom meeting and your computer dies.

I also utilize a power strip to accommodate my printer, light ring, and phone charger.  Surge protectors work wonders too!

Now that we have the basis of how to create a home office space discussing how to organize your home space will also be important.

Create a Real Estate Spot for Popular Items

Once you have your home office space identified and a focal point confirmed, develop a storage system for your popular office items that you can easily access.

Place items that you use frequently throughout the day on top of your desk.  In addition to having a desk, a rolling cart is also a great idea to house frequent used items.

Use bins to organize and group like items on the rolling cart or in your desk.

I currently have a clear organizer that I purchased from Amazon.  I organize and group all of my small office items here such as paper clips, clasps, and mini sticky notes, and USB drives.  In addition, I also have decorative cups that house my pens and pencils.

Do Not Keep all of your daily hard copies of files

Working from home will require you to host many virtual files and documents on your computer.

If your job requires that you review documents and articles, print these items out to gain a deeper understanding of the documents, but don’t hang on to these papers forever!  Once you complete the tasks that required the documents, throw away or shred the documents. You can throw the items away at the end of each work day or take time weekly to shred or disregard the items.

A large amount of papers causes an area to become cluttered fast which will decrease your productivity levels.

Declutter Daily

Approximately 15 minutes before you are scheduled to end the day, begin to declutter and clean your home office space. Remember to go through any papers that you used throughout the day.  File and keep important papers and throw away any papers that are no longer useful.

Place everything back in their correct place.  Place all of your pens together, place all of your paper clips back together, etc.  Visual labels are great for this step!

Lastly, jot down any items that need to be completed the next day and enjoy the rest of your day!

 Final Thoughts

Creating a home office space does not have to be complicated.  If you are in the beginning stages of completing a home office space, think about an appropriate space in your home for your office and be sure to make sure that you have appropriate furniture and lightning.  These steps will help you create a space that allows you to be productive in no time.

Don’t forget to create an organization plan as well for your home office!
